Music

Cantor Michael Bergman with Music Director Jennifer Moore

Music is a very important part of services at St. John’s. We have a rich musical tradition in the Anglican Church and by extension, the Episcopal Church. St. John’s is committed to honoring the deep Anglican musical traditions inherited over time within the context of our weekly service. Musical expression of our faith is centered upon the selection of hymns and service music that support the readings and messages expressed in the weekly homily and/or reflections. Open collaboration with the rector is essential to uniting liturgy and music in a meaningful expression of this faith. Remember, whenever you are singing to the Lord, you are praying twice!

Music at St. John’s also plays a significant role in fostering a sense of belonging and community. This is, for me, a priority. With the addition of our cantor, Michael Bergman, we are all able to explore new hymns, hear solos in a variety of musical styles without diminishing the quality of musical expression, while continuing to foster confidence in our congregational singing- though this is a community that is not hesitant to sing out! Each member allows themselves to be heard and therefore known through their open expression of prayer and praise through music. Additionally, our annual fundraisers feature more regional musical flavor- from contra dance, folk rock and beyond, we strive to reach the entire community!

It is always a joy to be able to invite instrumentalists into the church to contribute to the festive atmosphere surrounding the holidays and other special occasions. It is no exaggeration to say that every musician who has come to St. John’s to contribute their expertise and love of music leaves with a desire to return to this community. They feel welcomed, appreciated, and valued- because they are!

Music at St. John’s allows our community to enter the liturgy more thoughtfully, deeply, and joyfully. I can't think of a better way for people to be made to feel welcome than through music- it is something we celebrate at St. John’s!
